Semi-Independent Living Skills (SILS)
SILS Training helps clients by providing support to people in ways that enable them to achieve their personally desired goals and lead self-directed lives. We do this by providing clients training and assistance in activities to maintain an independent lifestyle. Some of these activities would include teaching and assisting clients with money management, meal preparation, how to shop, maintaining personal appearance and hygiene, teaching social skills that include appropriate social behavior, teaching recreation and transportation skills, and how to use the phone and other utilities.
The goal of the SILS program is to increase a person’s independence by teaching skills so that they may perform tasks and activities without dependence on caregivers. We do this by providing the client with daily schedules, routines, environments, and interactions similar to those of people without disabilities that are the same age as the client. Our goal is always to support the development of decision-making skills and informed choices in all aspects of daily living, including service provider selection, goals and methods of obtaining those goals, location and doctor of residence, roommates, daily routines, leisure activities, and personal possessions.
SILS Training is available for clients that meet the following criteria: 18 years of age and older, have been determined to have a developmental disability or a related condition, are unable to function independently without SILS services, and is NOT at risk of placement in an Intermediate Care Facility for People with Developmental Disabilities (ICF/DD).
ILS Training is direct training from a staff person to address the identified skill development needs of a person in the areas of: communication skills, community living and mobility, interpersonal skills, reduction/elimination of maladaptive behavior, self-care, sensory/motor development involved in acquiring functional skills.
Our goal in providing ILS Training to clients is to increase a person’s independence by teaching skills so that tasks and activities can be performed with decreased dependence on caregivers. In addition, ILS Training increases, the client’s opportunities to interact with people without disabilities who are not paid caregivers. ILS Training provides daily schedules, routines, environments, and interactions similar to those of people without disabilities of the same chronological age.
